National Urban League partners with award-winning producer, composer and director Elvin Ross with the promotion of his epic documentary film, Kunta Kinteh Island: Coming Home Without Shackles, as a celebration of the 35th Anniversary of the ABC-TV series Roots. In the documentary which features Roots cast member Ben Vereen, Ross chronicles the story of the legendary Kunta Kinteh and the process of renaming James Island to Kunta Kinteh Island, in honor of his legacy. Kunta Kinteh Island symbolizes the pride, strength, and rich cultural heritage of African and African-American people.
