"Drum Majors for Justice Celebration" on Friday, August 23rd, 2013

The National Urban League and the Memorial Foundation together hosted The Drum Majors for Justice Celebration on Friday August 23, 2013. In commemoration and continuation of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington we gathered at the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday August 24, 2013 in Washington D.C. Our organizations jointly celebrated this historic moment with the following events:

  • Drum Majors for Justice Redeem the Dream Summit; and
  • Drum Majors for Justice Future Leaders Celebration at the Martin Luther King Memorial
We respectfully invited all to join us for the Drum Majors for Justice Celebration. All of the events were free and open to the public.

Almost 50 years ago more than 300,000 Americans gathered in Washington, D.C. for the August 28, 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.  Under the leadership of A. Philip Randolph, president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, and in close collaboration with number of civil rights and religious groups the March on Washington was held to shed light on the political and social inequities inherent in the laws of the United States.

Women and men of all races, ages, and cultural backgrounds joined together on that humid day in Washington, DC to call for our country to live up to the promise of this democracy.  The result of their work was the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and changed the face of how people of all races and gender are treated.
